Spider Wire/Braided line Tips
By: Rich

I use Spider wire braid almost exclusively,  except for one finesse setup (which is spider-mono) and one crank bait setup which is Fusion all other rods are Spider Wire Braid.  I have been using it for 4 seasons and love it.  Here are some tips:

  • Always back your main braided line with a small amount of monofilament.  No matter how tight you spool it, the braid will spin independent of the spool.  I heard some people using electrical tape.  I wouldn't, the sticky will probably never come off.
  • The palomar knot is the absolute best knot for braided lines.  However, my partner and I have lost several fish when our knots have sliped through the break/seam in the eye of the hook.  To avoid this I've started using what Orlando calls the 'Triple Polamar Knot'.  Simply wrap the doubled up line three times around the eye, as opposed to once, and finish the knot as usual,  hasn't happened since.  The triple polamar has help to stop the line from sliding up towards the blades on spinner baits also.
  • I can usually get a full season out of a 100 - 150 yard spool (believe it or not).   Of course the season is abit shorter here.  At about the half way point in the season carefully take all the line off your reel.  Put it back on such that the used end is now on the bottom and the outside will be like new.  Try this - tie a big swivel to your line and hook it to a tree, or pole, car bumper - something  like that.  Walk about X yards (X = one half of however much line you think is left on your reel) and loop the line around some thing solid and walk back towards the starting point.  Swap ends and reel it back in, old stuff first.  Cool!  New line!!
  • Lighten up on your drag,  this line has zero stretch.
  • Buy it during the off season at Walmart, while the price is low.   Now it is around 18 bucks a spool, suddenly you'll see it at 12 or so - that's when you buy.

There are a few added hazards when fishing with super lines to keep in mind.

    • DO NOT TRY AND BREAK THIS LINE WITH YOUR HANDS, YOU MAY NEARLY LOOSE A FINGER.
    • DO NOT TRY AND FREE A SNAG WITH YOUR ROD TIP, MOST LIKELY YOU'LL BREAK THE ROD FIRST.
    • DO NOT RAP THE LINE AROUND YOUR HAND OR FINGERS WHILE LANDING A FISH
